When asked for advice on business success, I counsel people to build bridges to“nowhere”. While it is good to focus on the job at hand and develop yourself fully, it is
equally important to do some things in life where there is not an immediate reward.
When you build a bridge to nowhere, perhaps through volunteering or mentoring, you
never know what will come back across it. Some of my most interesting experiences
have resulted from opportunities which crossed a bridge built at an earlier point in my
career. I think this is a critical lesson learned from networking. Audie McCarthy has set
down the basic rules of networking in an easy-to-read and informative book appropriate
for a person of any age.
